Mobile Devices Insuring Competitive Edge for Brokers, Agents

insurance adjusters use mobile devices to speed claims processingThe insurance industry is facing tremendous market and regulatory pressures, leading to significant moves to automate and streamline business processes and improve accuracy in the face of declining customer loyalty and increasing competition.

According to the Frost & Sullivan white paper Using Mobile Solutions to Improve Insurance Sector Performance, that fierce competition means that whether they work in an independent brokerage or agency, or for a major insurance carrier, insurance industry employees are nearly five times as likely as workers in other industries are to use an iPad or Android tablet as their primary work computer.

Tablets with wireless access to back office systems and industry-specific software help claims adjusters and sales agents:

  • Close sales and claims processes with greater speed
  • Make fewer follow-up customer visits and phone calls
  • Fill out forms with greater accuracy
  • Make fewer trips back to the office

One common issue insurance company IT departments must face is delivering secure mobile printing on iPads and Android tablets, however. “Insurance is one of the most regulated industries, and insurance customers often need to share very sensitive information with agents and claims adjusters,” says Jared Hansen, CEO of Breezy. “And there are a many instances within the insurance industry where a printed copy of a document is vital. Combine the two, and it’s no wonder that a secure mobile printing solution is so important in the industry.”

Changing Compliance Climate

Insurers are faced with numerous state, federal and international regulations. In addition to complex regulations like the Sarbanes Oxley Act and the USA Patriot Act in the United States and Solvency II in Europe, insurance companies face oversight and regulations from NAIC (state insurance regulators) and FINRA (the financial services regulatory agency).

For IT, this means investing in stricter internal controls, enhanced security and more automated business processes. It also means finding ways to provide security and support for a wide range of mobile device operating systems and processing.

Within the insurance industry, on-device encryption is the Holy Grail of mobile print security for the simple reason that it’s the only way to protect sensitive company information at rest (being
stored on the mobile device) and in transit to another device (such as a printer).

Data that isn’t encrypted on the mobile device where it is stored is subject to man-in-the-middle attacks when it is “in transit” between the mobile device and the printer. And while nearly every vendor uses some form of encryption, many use only “transport layer” encryption, rather than performing full encryption on the mobile device.

“When we talk to companies in the insurance industry, the question of on-device encryption is critical,” Hansen says. “So is integration with mobile device management (MDM) solutions like AirWatch, MobileIron, Citrix, Good, and others.”

The integration between a leading secure mobile printing application like Breezy and the mobile device management solution in use in the back office does more than insure end-to-end security, Hansen points out. It also provides the detailed information and reporting that can be required in the event of a FINRA or NAIC audit or a Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) breach.

Selecting a solution that allows users to print from an iPad or Android device that is integrated with the company’s overall mobile device management and security solution also provides:

  • Single Sign On (SSO) credentials for end users
  • Fast, hassle-free set-up and installation
  • No learning curve for end users or administrators
  • Complete print management and security from any device to any printer
